LEGION OF MARY

The Legion of Mary is the largest organization of lay people in the Catholic Church, with more than two million active members in every country of the world. In 1996 the Legion celebrated its 75th Anniversary. It has been active in the United States since 1931.

The Legion of Mary makes its members better Christians through a balanced program of prayer and action. Legion works include evangelization activities, hospital and nursing home visitation, youth work, prison ministry, community projects and other works of service. It offers Catholics of all ages an opportunity to work for their church while deepening their spiritual lives. Members meet once a week for prayer and discussion. They spend two additional hours each week in work activities, preferably in pairs and geared to individual capabilities.

All Catholics can belong. For the first three months, the Legion allows for an adjustment period to see how Legion activities and family obligations mesh with the tried and proven format of the Legion system. Following this period is formal membership. Any Catholic, who is willing to work for the Legion ideals of spiritual development and interest in others, is welcome to give it a try.
