The St. Thomas Aquinas Vigil Schola Cantorum is a SATB quartet of professional singers who sing at the 4:00 p.m. vigil mass on Saturdays.
The mainstay of the Schola repertoire is a cappella sacred music, especially Gregorian chant and Renaissance polyphony by such composers as Byrd, Tallis, Palestrina, Victoria, di Lasso, Sheppard, Taverner, Gibbons, and Purcell. Schola masses celebrate the earliest traditions of choral singing in the Roman Catholic Church and strive to preserve the important heritage of chant in the liturgy.
Membership in the Schola is by invitation.
The Church acknowledges Gregorian chant as specially suited to the Roman liturgy; therefore, other things being equal, it should be given pride of place in liturgical services.” (SC. 116).
